GARNACHA TINTA

MARAÑONES TINTO 2022

Marañones Tinto 2022 is an estate wine with the marked character of the mesoclimate and the three types of granite in Gredos: white granite, brown granite and pink granite. The sandy texture and the goblet training of the 50 to 70 year old Garnacha vines reveal a unique identity with the blend of the estate’s small plots. The altitude of over 800 meters favors a slow and balanced ripening of the grapes. This unique environment helps to manage viticulture in a way that is extremely respectful of the environment. The ecosystem established brings a particular plurality to the wines.

Pure expression of the Marañones estate. The mineral personality of the granite. The vivacity of Grenache and the nobility of a historic soil. Texture, length and elegance.

An extreme climatic year

The last few months of 2021 were rainy and mild. 2022 started in the same way; no extreme cold days, but no rain. The vines began to weep at the end of March due to the high temperatures at the time, but the vines did not start to bud until the end of April due to the low spring rainfall. May was a particularly atypical month due to the high temperatures recorded. Flowering took place across the board in mid-June in a rapid manner and with a correct fruit set. The summer was extremely dry and hot with successive heat waves that caused vegetative stoppage at times in the youngest plants. These characteristics of the cycle also allowed the sanitary condition to remain perfect. Ripening took place rapidly in August. Harvest began on 1 September and lasted until 29 September.

The granites of Marañones

At more than 800 meters above sea level, in a mosaic of small plots, on a mountainous orography, we find the Marañones estate. In this environment we find a geology composed of granitic hercynian rocks, adamelites with megacrystals and torrallitic microaggregates. The small Garnacha vines that make up the estate give rise to Marañones. These vines are between 50 and 70 years old and maintain the traits of San Martín’s viticultural history. The slopes formed by the valley where they are located provide an excellent opportunity for organic viticulture. This environmentally friendly philosophy makes possible an optimal balance in the estate’s ecosystem and in the personality of the wines.

A unique Garnacha

Marañones Tinto 2022 comes from the estate of the same name, located high above the valley. During the harvest, the bunches were picked by hand in 12 kg boxes. The selected grapes arrived at the winery whole and were macerated with their own stems. Fermentation took place in French oak vats of 3,000 to 4,500 liters and in stainless steel tanks, making pigeage. It was aged for 15 months on its own lees in foudres and French oak and concrete vats of between 1,000 and 5,000 liters. For greater protection, the wine contains sulfites. It was bottled in the spring of 2024.
