GARNACHA TINTA

MARAÑONES TINTO 2019

Marañones 2019 is a site wine that represents the character of the soils and the orography of San Martín de Valdeiglesias. Its name comes from the area where most of our vineyards are located. The origin of the name of the area is related to the blackthorn bush or “arañón”.

Pure expression, both on the nose and in the mouth, of the sloe, sensation of fleshy fruit. Texture, length, finesse, elegance and florality in one wine.

The expression of a dry vintage

The 2019 vintage was characterised by a marked drought that caused more water stress than usual in other years. This lack of water, combined with slightly higher temperatures, especially during the autumn, accelerated the ripening of the berries. We enjoyed a very aromatic vintage, with hints of herbs and spices, and with a more robust tannic structure than in previous vintages. Harvesting of the Garnacha grapes began on 7 September and ended on 14 September as the last day of picking.

The three granites of San Martín

At an altitude of over 800 metres above sea level and facing north, we find an area where the three types of granite found in San Martín de Valdeiglesias coexist: white, brown and pink granite. Each of the plots that give rise to Marañones has a different soil and orography, some occupying the top of the hills and others located on the flattest terrain. This mixture of textures and horizons give rise to this wine. With a depth of up to 100 centimetres, this terroir is home to a vineyard of between 50 and 70 years of age that is cared for organically, respecting and enhancing the biodiversity of the area.

During the harvest, the bunches of grapes were hand-picked in 12 kg boxes. The selected grapes arrived at the winery 100% to begin the winemaking process with a cold pre-fermentation maceration. For fermentation, indigenous yeasts were used to maintain the character of the vineyard. Fermentation took place in 33 hl French oak vats, with pigeage and foot treading. The wine was then aged for 12 months in used 500-litre French oak barrels and 30-hl foudres. This wine did not undergo any stabilisation, clarification or filtration processes. The wine was bottled in the spring of 2020.
