GARNACHA TINTA

MARAÑONES TINTO 2021

Marañones 2021 is an estate wine with the character of the mesoclimate and the three types of granite in Gredos: white granite, brown granite and pink granite. 50-70 year old goblet-trained Grenache vines grown in sandy soil reveal a unique identity for this blend of the estate’s small plots. The altitude of over 800 meters favors a slow ripening of the grapes. This unique environment helps manage viticulture in a way that is extremely respectful of the environment. The ecosystem created brings a particular plurality to the wines.

Pure expression of the Marañones estate. The mineral personality of granite. The vivacity of Grenache and the nobility of a historic soil. Texture, length and elegance.

A complex climatic year but of extraordinary quality

The autumn of 2020 was characterized by mild temperatures and average precipitation. January and February were particularly cold months, accompanied by the Filomena weather episode. Bud break occurred in early April. May and June were characterized by average temperatures and above average rainfall; however meticulous work in the vineyard ensured good health. Flowering occurred at the end of May with excellent fruit set. The summer was dry with mild temperatures except for a short heatwave in mid-August. The development and ripening of the vines was progressive and the grapes had ideal acidity at the time of picking. The harvest ran from September 1st-29th with intermittent episodes of rain that extended the harvest. In Gredos, the 2021 vintage will be remembered as one of the most favorable in terms of climate.

The granites of Marañones

At more than 800 meters above sea level, in a mosaic of small plots, on a mountainous orography, we find the Marañones estate. In this environment we find a geology composed of Hercynian granitic rocks, adamelites with megacrystals and torrallitic microaggregates. The small Garnacha vines that dot the estate give rise to Marañones. These vines are between 50 and 70 years old and maintain the traits of San Martín’s viticultural history. The slopes formed by the valley provide an excellent opportunity for organic viticulture. This environmentally friendly philosophy creates an optimal balance in the estate’s ecosystem and in the personality of the wines.

A unique Garnacha

Marañones 2021 comes from the estate of the same name, located high above the valley. Hand-harvested in 12kg crates, the grapes were fermented with indigenous yeast and periodic pigeage in large French oak and concrete vats between 1,000 and 5,000 liters. Aged for 12 months in French oak of varying sizes from traditional barrels to large 30 hl foudres. This wine has not undergone stabilization, clarification or filtration processes. For greater protection, the wine contains sulfites. It was bottled in the spring of 2022.
