GARNACHA TINTA
PEÑA CABALLERA 2020
Peña Caballera 2020 is a wine that comes from the plot to which it owes its name at the top of the Marañones estate. The hectare and a half of old Grenache vines grown in granitic soils rises above the rest of the San Martín de Valdeiglesias vineyards: at 850 meters above sea level, while its north-facing orientation allows the grapes to ripen slowly acquiring maximum complexity. The philosophy of respect in viticulture and winemaking achieves the full expression of an exceptional vineyard.
Freshness of the Gredos mountain range. Balance of the Marañones landscape. The identity of an extraordinary plot. Florality and finesse of Grenache. Delicate and elegant finish.

A dream vintage
The 2020 vintage was a great year climatically in the area; the winter began with record low rainfall, which delayed the start of the plant lifecycle, while a rainy March and April facilitated rapid vine development, requiring extra effort to maintain balance in the vineyard. The summer was very dry and hot. Intermittent rains across August helped mitigate the lack of continuous rainfall and facilitated the final development of the vines. The red varieties for Peña Caballera were harvested in two days at the beginning of September.

The essence of a unique plot
The Peña Caballera plot is located in the undulating terrain of San Martín, in the highest part of the Marañones estate, at an altitude of 850 meters above sea level. Garnacha vines on granitic soil up to 70 years old preside over a landscape of plant diversity among holm oaks, olive trees and blackthorns. The horizon of the Sierra de Gredos in the background helps preserve freshness as the vines ripen: with a marked north-facing orientation and protected by the mountains, the slow evolution of the vine in each new cycle fills the grapes with complexity. Peña Caballera, barely a hectare and a half in size, becomes the maximum expression of the Garnacha grape in the area.

Identity of the plot
The philosophy of extreme respect in viticulture and winemaking defines the profile of Peña Caballera 2020. Hand-harvested in 12 kg crates, the whole bunches then undergo a pre-fermentation cold maceration. Fermented with periodic pigeage in open 33hl French oak vats with only indigenous yeasts from the plot itself and aged for 12-months in 1,500- liter French oak foudre. This wine has not undergone stabilization, clarification or filtration processes. For greater protection, the wine contains sulfites. Bottled in the spring of 2021.
