ALBILLO REAL
PICARANA 2021
Picarana 2021 is the purest expression of albillo real that represents the environment of the Marañones estate. Natural aeration, the freshness from the altitude and the orientation of the plots provide an outstanding balance in the vineyard. The goblet-trained vines are between 30 and 70 years old with very low yields limited to small clusters. The philosophy of respect in viticulture and winemaking shows the purest varietal character. Florality, complexity and texture of the terroir.
The profile of the albillo real in San Martín de Valdeiglesias. Delicate nuances, balance in maturation and a long, elegant finish.
A complex climatic year but of extraordinary quality
The autumn of 2020 was characterized by mild temperatures and average precipitation. January and February were particularly cold, accompanied by the Filomena weather episode. Bud break occurred in early April. May and June were characterized by average temperatures and above average rainfall; however meticulous work in the vineyard ensured good health. Flowering occurred at the end of May with excellent fruit set. The summer was dry with mild temperatures except for a short heatwave in mid-August. The development and ripening of the vines was progressive and the grapes had ideal acidity at the time of picking. The nighttime harvest was short and took place in mid-August. In Gredos, the 2021 vintage will be remembered as one of the most favorable in terms of climate.
Albillo Real vines
In a rugged orography, nestled away in the trees that border the Sierra de Gredos, the different vineyard plots dot a landscape dominated by forests and crops. The Albillo Real vines recall the past of the San Martín de Valdeiglesias area where this variety has reigned among the white varieties since the 16th century. The small clusters of these goblet-trained vines, between 30 and 70 years old, find the perfect balance for their development in the conditions of southern Gredos. The mesoclimate of the Marañones estate, with an altitude of between 750 and 850 meters above sea level, offers a characteristic freshness and ripeness to this variety.
Careful processing
Hand-harvested in 12 kg crates and carefully transported to the winery´s cold chamber to rest for 24 hours. After pressing, the grapes were naturally racked at room temperature for another 24 hours. Fermentation was carried out with indigenous yeasts on the lees in a 1,200-liter French oak foudre. For greater protection, the wine contains sulfites. After aging for 10 months, it was blended and bottled in the summer of 2022.
