ALBILLO REAL

PIES DESCALZOS 2020

Pies Descalzos 2020 comes from the plot known as Peña Cruzada, in the undulations of the Gredos border between the Marañones estate and San Martín de Valdeiglesias. The 0.7 hectares of old albillo real vines, its pink granite soil and the vineyard’s mesoclimate fill this vineyard with nuances. Its homogeneity and integration with the environment complement it. An exceptional vineyard.

Elegance and length. The pure expression of the Peña Cruzada plot. The balance in the vineyard between viticulture, soil, climate and variety. Wine for cellaring.

A dream vintage

The 2020 vintage was a great climatic year in the area; the winter started with lower-than-usual rainfall. The rains in the second half of March and April slowed down the start of the plant cycle. The development of the vine was very fast and involved extra work to maintain the balance in viticulture. The summer was very dry and hot. A somewhat rainy August mitigated the lack of continuous rainfall and facilitated the final development of the vines. The Albillo Real were harvested between 13th and 29th August.

Pink granite

The Peña Cruzada plot, with 0.7 ha of Albillo Real, is part of the undulations on the edge of the Gredos mountain range, between San Martín de Valdeiglesias and the Marañones estate. The vines are more than 50 years old and are surrounded by forest and diversity, with a balance typical of plots where climate, variety, soil and viticulture find an extraordinary harmony. The stony pink granite soils and the sandy textures of some areas facilitate organic viticulture and respect for the whole project. The gentle slope and the creeping growth of the old vines form the identity of this vineyard.

Unique essence

The homogeneity in the ripening of the vines in this plot allows the production of a wine with a distinctive essence. The grapes are harvested by hand in 12 kg boxes and spend 24 hours in cold storage before being processed. After pressing, the grapes are naturally racked at room temperature for 24 hours. The must, together with its fine lees, ferments in used medium toast barrels with a capacity of 700 liters. After fermentation, Pies Descalzos 2020 was aged for 12 months on its lees in the same barrels. This wine has not undergone stabilization processes. For greater protection, the wine contains sulfites. It was bottled unfiltered in the fall of 2021.
